Through my years in practice I have seen multiple times patients and families go through unnecessary and poorly addressed frustration, anger and discomfort from not having proper understanding of their disease or from going through fruitless, extensive, tiring and debilitating tests and treatments. There are times when the before mentioned can be worse than the disease itself, Robbing patients and loved ones of precious time and opportunities to focus on other things, like spending time with each other, handling affairs, being able to process what is happening and at times able to come to terms.
There comes a time when we must accept and allow things to run their course. As much as I want to sustain life, I realize that a time comes to concede. A good hospice team is priceless at that moment, and can help individuals and families avoid the misery imposed by modern medicine, and instead serenely navigate this last transition.
