He completed his Medical school from Trivandrum Medical College, University of Kerala, India and then completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Long Island College Hospital/ SUNY at Brooklyn, New York followed by a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Brown University School of Medicine in Rhode Island and Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship and Sleep medicine training at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida.

He has been practicing Pulmonary medicine, Sleep medicine and Critical Care Medicine in the united states for over 20 years. Pulmonology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. Pulmonology is synonymous with pneumology, respiratory medicine, and chest medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonologists are specially trained in diseases and conditions of the chest, particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and complicated chest infections. Critical care medicine is an increasingly important medical specialty. Physicians with training in critical care medicine are referred to as intensivists. Most medical research has demonstrated that ICU care provided by intensivists produces better outcomes and more cost-effective care. His areas of interest are: Asthma, COPD, Sleep apnea, different types of pneumonia’s, pulmonary fibrosis, ARDS, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, tobacco smoke, asbestos, autoimmune diseases and Lung cancer. Procedures performed (Not a complete list): Pulmonary Function Tests, Bronchoscopy with bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL), and biopsies, Review Chest X-rays, CT scans, Positron emission tomography (especially in lung cancer), Ventilator management, CVP, Arterial lines and Swan-ganz catheter placement and Polysomnography (sleep studies) commonly used for the diagnosis of Sleep apnea.

Sunil Kumar, MD, currently practices at the Broward Health Medical Center which is part of Broward Health System that is one of the largest health care facilities in USA. He held multiple leadership positions including Chief of Staff. He is also the Founder and Director of the ICU program ata Broward Health Medical center.

Dr. Kumar is an affiliate Dean and an assistant professor of Medicine at The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. He is actively involved in teaching and clinical research. He is also the Past President of AKMG (Association of Kerala Medical Graduates- North America). He also has memberships at the American College of Physicians (ACP), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI). He also serves on the Governing Board of American Lung Association.
